There are so many types of offroading(rock climbing, sand, mud, and for some water puddles in the road). For mud in my opinion if its not a race and its about going in and coming out the other side on your own, I think the ideal vehicle is a suzuki samurai with 42" TSL's, gears, and a big block motor. For the average joe the best out of the box vehicles are toyota pickups, samurai's, and jeeps. No love for the V8's and heavy vehicles sorry. Nothing against them though. ;D

For overall wheeling I think the wheelbase on the 2door suvs(Bronco, k-5, Ramchargers) work well and usually have v-8 power that way you have good bottom end and don't have to turn the motors as much as with 4&6 cylinder motors. You have more weight but it's more evenly distributed than a pick-up. The smaller suv's and pick-ups work good and are lighter(xj cherokees, yotas, rangers etc)and the 4&6 cyl. motors pullem good with some gears and go really good, just look at higgens and Josh, hell nothin stops them yotas, and Stacey Babbs xj rocks but I grew up in the 80s and just like a v8 and loud pipes. As far as a jeep, well, I'm probably not the opinion yall want. ;D and the samis rock.

you would have to do a lot of fab up front to put the motor in. with the bug cut the body and drop it on and bob the frame
